The all-new Audi Q5, Audi’s new rival for the BMW X3 and Land Rover Freelander.

Audi claims that the Q5 is the sportiest SUV in its class and it will be released with three different engines, one petrol and two disels. All of the models will have Audi’s quattro all-wheel drive system and climate control as a standard feature, with a huge list of optional extras. The Q5 is based on the same MLP modular chassis as the A4 and A5, but the only difference is the Q5 is 4.6m long and 1.65m high SUV.

The Q5 has a very neat styling but the Q7 was a lot more aggressive. Audi says that the Q5 has a wheelbase of 2.8m, which is claimed to be the longest in its class.

The bottom of the line Q5 engine will be the 170bhp, 2.0 TDI, common-rail turbodiesel engine, where the top of the range will be the 240bhp, 3.0-litre, V6 TDI engine. The only petrol engine is the new four-cylinder, 211bhp, 2.0 TFSI motor with Audi’s own variable valve-lift system and direct injection.

The quattro four-wheel drive system is so dynamic that it is set to send 60 per cent of the engines power to the rear wheels on normal roads, but in extreme conditions it can switch up to 65 per cent of the power to the front wheels and 85 per cent to the rear.

Two ‘body packages’ will be available, the S line which gives the Q5 a more sporty look, while the off-road edition has front and back under body protection.

Audi says that the ESP can communicate with the Q5’s roof rack, so when there is a heavy load above the ESP can engauge earlier than normal.

Options include dynamic steering, which can adjust the level of assistance, a lane-departure warning system, cruise control, blind-spot warning, a rear-view parking camera, a panoramic sunroof and a heated and ventilated drinks holder.

Audi expects to sell around 8000 Q5s in the UK every year. The Q5 will arrive in the UK at the end of 2008, with prices ranging from just under £30,000.
Auto insurance on this vehicle will be at a similar price to the BMW X3 and Land Rover Freelander.
