Ford Motor Co. has decided to up the powertrain on the new reworked 2009 Ford Fusion sedan.

Ford will be replacing the Fusions old 160bhp inline four-cylinder engine with a better, more powerful 170bhp four-cylinder, with variable valve timing and a six speed gearbox. The new Fusion will be a lot more powerful than the old model and it will have a better gas mileage.

Product analyst Erich Merkle of IRN Inc. of Grand Rapids said “I think it’s going to be a great engine.” He also says that by adding more power with better fuel efficiency could not come at a better time with the gas prices so expensive.

The engine is the 2.5-litre which was unveiled by Ford last month and the same motor which is in the Ford Escape and Mercury Mariner. The gearbox will also be the same in all the vehicles.

Ford will also be replacing the 3.0-litre V6 engines which are in the Mariner and Escape. Ford did not say anything about the new V6 being in the Fusion, but it is most likely to also replace the existing V6.

The new Fusion which has been redesigned will look newer in the front and it will have a brand new better and upgraded interior.

After the Fusion was released by Ford in 2005, it became one of the top selling vehicles for automakers and auto insurance was cheap.

The car will be rivaled against the new Chevrolet Malibu and is been said to be equal, if not better than the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord.

The cars selling price wasn’t discussed yet, but it should be a similar price as the old one. Auto insurance should also be similar to the old version.

Price: Should be similar to old one
Auto Insurance: Should be similar to older models
