In a private ceremony in Italy, Lamborghini have donated a police version of the company’s newest supercar, the 2009 Gallardo LP560-4 Polizia, to the head of the Italian State Police, Prefect Antonio Manganelli.
The new Lamborghini replaces the old Gallardo in use by the Italian police force since 2004 and it has a more powerful 560-hp V10 engine which is capable of reaching speeds of up to 203mph or 327km/h.
The Gallardo Polizia will be used by the Lazio Highway Police Department.
The first-generation Gallardo was in service in Rome and according to Lamborghini the model was used for around 140,000km of patrol duty on the motorways of central and southern Italy. The first-generation Gallardo Polizia was also used on emergency medical transport.
Italian police have also got another Gallardo, which is painted in blue and white police colours, the model has been in service since 2005 and it has racked up about 62,000 miles on the Bologna roads.
Like the predecessor, the new Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4 Polizia will have all sorts of hi-tech gadgets, like the aerodynamically optimized (sic) police beacon and LED signals on the front, sides and rear of the light’s aluminum shell. There is also a video/photo system which works with the GPS data to determine the speed of the vehicle being pursued. The new Gallardo Polizia also features a specialized refrigeration system for safe transportation of donor organs in case of a medical emergency.
There will only be 30 lucky police officers who are permitted to drive the Gallardo Polizia, after they receive special training in the use of the Gallardo’s medical equipment.
Lamborghini has said that each person on the special operations team, which includes three woman, have all undertaken several days of driver training with Lamborghini’s test drivers.
