The global economic crisis seemed to have no effect on the Motorsport division from BMW, as BMW’s M division reported a 50 percent sales increase for 2008, when compared to 2007.

BMW sold an overall total of 24,186 ‘M’ vehicles in 2008, making the year 2008 the second best year in the sport division’s 30-year run. The best year was in 2002, when they sold 26,776 units.

The new BMW M3 was the ‘big hit’ for the M division, as they sold 18,000 units worldwide.

The M3 Coupe was the best model, as 10,571 of them were purchased. The M3 sedan came in second with 3,253 units, and the M3 Convertible was third with 4,169 units.

BMW’s M5 Sedan and Touring capped out at 2,465 units, while the M6 Convertible was only purchased by 1,158 units. The M6 Coupe was sold 1,102 times, with the Z4 M Coupe being sold 739 units. The Z4 M Roadster had the worst sales figures, as only 699 units were sold.

The strongest sales growth came from Canada, where sales increased by around 130 percent.
