Volkswagen’s Scirocco R has finally been revealed in full production form. The new model features a reworked 2.0-litre engine from the Golf V GTI. This engine now has new modifications and upgrades, such as a new intercooler and a higher boosting turbo for a total output of 265-hp and 350Nm of torque.
It was said that VW chose the older GTI model for this model so that they could lower development costs, and there’s no reason why a perfectly good motor should go to waste.
This is the motor which will replace the Golf R32’s 3.2-litre V6 engine. The new R32 will be the R20, and this will be connected to a 6-speed manual box with the option of a twin-clutch DSG box.
The Scirocco R will now have the all wheel drive, and it will stick to a front wheel drive layout. The will keep weight down to 1,330kg, and it is expected that this model will have a 6.5 second 0-100km/h time with the manual box, and 6.4 seconds with the DSG box. The top speed is set at 250km/h and this model is actually faster than the Golf GTI and R32 4Motion which have times of 6.9 and 6.5 seconds for 0-100km/h.
VW’s Scirocco R features a lowered suspension, new dampers and springs, new brake discs and a new electronic XDS differential which is also found in the new Golf GTI.
There is a new aerodynamic package with a new aggressive look, but not as aggressive as the concept. The package features a new front bumper, bigger air vents and LED daytime lights in the front, side skirts, a new grille, roof spoiler, a restyled bumper and smoked tail lights.
Expect the R model to have 18-inch alloy wheels, with the option of 19-inches.
Inside you will find a set of bucket seats, a three spoke steering wheel with a flat bottom and the ‘R’ logo. There will be a subtly restyled instrument panel as well.
Arrive for this model is expected later this year… for the UK. VW has no plans for this model in the USA.
