Spies on the Nurburgring have caught the 2012 Volkswagen Passat undergoing testing with the current generation skin on its back. The new model will have an elongated body with more cabin room and more leg room for rear passengers.

On this model you will find wider fenders and the possibility of more elbow space (!!!). There will also be the use of light weight materials and also an overall less weight.

Exterior styling on the new Passat should come in the form of more bold lines and less ‘dullness’.

Rumours of the engine range include a 3.0-litre V6 petrol unit with 280-hp, but also a 300-hp diesel motor. There is even a chance of a 3.0-litre V6 engine with hybrid technology.

Expect 4Motion all-wheel-drive on the Passat as well as the eight-speed DSG ‘box. Other features will include automatic parking, parking cameras, airless tires and windshield cleaning sans wipers.

More rumours state that there might even be magnetic paint which will use a voltage system to allow colour change.
