During the weekend a tragic event occurred. Formula One driver, Felipe Massa was involved in a life-threatening accident during the qualifying session in Hungary. The 28-year-old Brazilian had to undergo surgery on his fractured skull after a piece of Rubens Barrichello’s car fell off during the session and struck Massa on the helmet.

The piece of steel weighed 800 grams and it cut, and damaged the forehead of the Brazilian.

It was said that his condition is serious, and he is currently in ICU, where he is being monitored 24 hours a day. Massa is currently on a respirator, where he was woken up yesterday for a short period of time.

Massa will remain in a coma for two more days, and the following is quoted, “It (the CT scan) brought the result we had expected concerning an injury of this type,” Peter Gaszo said.

Massa responded to his family when they were at his bedside during the weekend, and then he was sedated again. This is a standard procedure with this kind of injury. He will be in a coma until tomorrow.

“I think he’s okay,” F1 chief executive Bernie Ecclestone, who visited Massa in hospital on Saturday and again on Sunday morning, said today in the Hungaroring paddock.

“Everybody seemed quite happy with him this morning. The hospital is happy, which is more important.”

McLaren team boss Martin Whitmarsh said, “You have to remember that motor racing is dangerous and that racing drivers are incredibly brave. It’s all too easy to become blase about that.”

We wish Massa, the entire Formula One squad, and of course his family the best of luck and a speedy recovery. We really hope that you will make it through this!!
