Day One Coverage — The Franschhoek Motor Museum Concours & Time Trial [Loads Of Pics]

Day One of the Franschhoek Motor Museum Concours & Time Trial — amazing. The event hosted has been super so far.

For those unsure with the event, it’s simply a celebration of classic cars which changed the automotive world in one way or another.

The museum boasts over 200 cars in its collection, however, only 80 will be displayed at once. The images we’ve snapped from the event include some super, supercars such as a 2003 Ferrari Enzo, a Ferrari F50, the McLaren F1, the Mercedes-Benz Gullwing and the Ford Model T, amongst others.

Starting off in the morning: The traffic management was really good, and parking was easy to come across. Shuttles would take you to the event if you happened to have parked far away.

The pit area was open to visitors to browse the cars which would soon make a run, or four, on the track. The best times of the day ranged in the low 2-minute mark. Although speed of the car is important for this event,  it seemed to depend on how crazy brave the driver is, as there is one tight corner where we almost saw a Ferrari hurt itself. Badly.

As the day progressed, free water was definitely necessary.

The museum was open for spectators, and we came across a real set of shiners. Our gallery below has all of the cars, on show at the time. As I mentioned above, the Model T, Enzo and F1 were ready to bring a smile to every onlooker.

Did I mention that we saw a Gullwing? It was truly surprising, as well as entertaining to see this on show as it’s the basis for the new SLS AMG. After experiencing this car in real life, it’s changed my outlook on the SLS AMG.

Following these show cars were old Bugatti’s, Jaguars and even race versions of the Mercedes-Benz CLK range. Yeah — the DTM models.

In the show area for the museum Porsche had the Panamera Turbo and Panamera 4S on show, while Viglietti Motors — the Cape Town suppliers of Ferrari and Maserati — had the California and Quattroporte Sport GTS on show.

The track: A long straight with a 90 degree bend at one point. After this there were a few curves which seemed to be a tight fit for a few of the cars going a little too fast.

Back to the cars, because that’s what we want to see, right?

There were many variations of everything on site. Ford GT40’s built in South Africa graced our presence, where we were lucky enough to run into a Shelby GT500 as well. Unfortunately we did not seem to get images of the GT500 racing as we were still trying to find a good spot to snap a few shots.

Only after a few of the stunning cars went by did we find a spot up close, on a slight bend, under a bridge, next to some hay.

While super cars around a course are cool, we’re excited to announce that the Toyota Conquest Turbo nailed one of the fastest times… And that’s because it’s a four-wheel-drive turbocharged machine built for rally.

My surprise for the day: Not one Lamborghini. Anywhere. No Countach, no Diablo, no nothing. Not even a damn Gallardo cruising around.

Anyway, tomorrow marks the final day for the event. We’ll be attending to snap some more shots.. and I heard that a BMW M1 will be going around the track. Exciting!

On a lighter note, please excuse my photos. I’m not very good with a camera.
