Hyundai’s iX35 Has Arrived In South Africa — Details, Images & Pricing

South Africa has received Hyundai’s iX35, the latest Crossover Utility Vehicle from the Korean automaker. The iX35 is the replacement for the Tucson, a previously popular vehicle on the local road.

“The iX35, which replaces our popular Tucson, is another manifestation of the rapid progress which the Hyundai brand continues to make,” says Hyundai’s Director of Marketing Stanley Anderson. “We are confident it will do the same in the important compact lifestyle vehicle segment as the i10, i20 and i30 hatchbacks have done in the segments in which they compete.”

Hyundai has produced six different versions for the local market. Four of these models will use the Theta II petrol engine with a 2.0- or 2.4-litre displacement. The remainder of the models will feature the R2.0-litre CRDI turbodiesel motor.

Both four-wheel and two-wheel-drive versions will grace the market. The four-wheel-drive variants start with the R-Type turbodiesel and 2.4-litre models with automatic gearboxes.

Exterior changes to the Tucson replacement include a ‘fluidic’ design language with new curves and lines. There is a longer and wider body followed by a reduced overall height of 20mm. Key design features include a new grille, lines on the bonnet, swept-back lights, elongated tail light clusters and more prominent wheel houses.

Inside boasts more leg room, 591-litres of load space or 1,436 when the rear seats are down, a stitched leather steering wheel, gauge clusters from Hyundai’s Genesis sedan and other blue-lighted panels. The features include a steering wheel mounted set of controled, a reversing camera with the rear view mirror, leather trimming, a roof-mounted sunglasses holder, a fully functional driving computer and electric windows all round.

Other enhancements include dual-zone climate control, cruise control and black leather upholstery.

Hyundai said that the 2.0-litre Theta II engine pumps out 122kW with 197Nm of torque. The fuel consumption is 8.7-litres per 100km while the CO2 emissions sit at 206g/km.

The 2.4-litre motor will boast 130kW with 227Nm of torque. The fuel consumption is 9.2 litres per 100km.

iX35 diesels use 6.4-litres of fuel per 100km. They will emit 170g/km of CO2.
