Ford Motor Company South Africa are recalling Mazda3 and Mazda5 models due to reports of power steering problems.

Ford said that 2,240 Mazda5 and 660 Mazda3 models build between 2007 and 2008 could potentially suffer from this problem.

It was said that rust from a high-pressure pump could cause a slight bit of strain on the power steering pump, resulting in the entire system failing.

There is a voluntary recall for the pump, however Ford will contact the owners about the problem.

“For the South African market, we will send out an official letter to all owners of affected vehicles towards the end of August 2010, notifying them of the pending repairs, and asking them to wait until preparations for the repairs can be completed,” said Lloyd Marlowe, a FoMoCoSA employee.

“Following this, we will send out a second letter in stages asking owners to drop off their vehicles for repair. We are aiming for the staggered repair of all affected vehicles to be completed by roughly March 2011, depending on the response rate from our customers.

“However, customers who are experiencing steering power related concerns should contact our dealer network immediately.”
